I really like the Samsung T3 which I think was replaced with the T5. However more than likely Lightroom will be on the SSD portion of the Fusion Drive.Īs far as external USB SSDs go. The new Mac Minis are much faster, but I was interested in the speed difference between the internal SSD and external SSD. If you want to make sure Lightroom stays on the/a SSD you'll need to unfuse the drive (I don't recommend this personally) or install MacOS on and external, make it the start up disk and then reinstall Lightroom on that. And transferring the media onto the Mac will likely be bottlenecked elsewhere, and if you aren't because you have a UHS-II or III card with dedicated reader it won't bad for imagines. Since the 'fusion' drive is a hybrid of a rotational drive and ssd combo is would appear to be limited to the reliability of the hard-drive. I know an SSD can last up to 100 years and has no moving parts.

However I would like to know what the warranty and reliability is of the fusion drive as opposed to an SSD. The files used for your projects are typically small enough that performance won't be unbearably slow. I am considering buying a new iMac 27 with 2tb drive. Lightroom itself will end up residing on the SSD portion if used enough.
Imac fusion drive vs ssd vs external drive serial numbers#
It meets the demand for being priced just between owning fully SSD. Each original hard drive in iMacs have 2 serial numbers - the one, that can be seen, is Seagate or in your case - WD number. If you can only get Fusion the 2tb or 3tb would be a better option for you.įor photo editing you'll be fine though. Fusion drives are a great and less costly alternative in comparison to fully SSD in pricing.

Might be too late for this but the 2tb and 3tb Fusion Drives have much larger SSD portions (128gb vs 24gb found in the 1tb model).
